Oklahoma stuns No. 1 Texas on Sandell's final-play field goal
Tate Sandell's 47-yard kick lifted the Sooners to a 27-24 Red River rivalry victory in Dallas.
The Big Picture
Oklahoma stunned No. 1 Texas 27-24 on Saturday in Dallas, with Tate Sandell making a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the Red River rivalry game.
The victory gave the Sooners a win over a top-ranked opponent for the first time since they defeated Missouri 38-17 in 2007, according to The Guardian. Oklahoma had previously been 0-4-1 against Texas teams ranked No. 1.
Oklahoma is now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Texas fell to 4-1 and 1-1 in conference play.
What Happened
Texas had two opportunities late to take control. Longhorns kicker Gianni Spetic missed a 53-yard field-goal attempt wide right with 1:55 remaining. Oklahoma then went three-and-out for the seventh time, returning possession to Texas with a chance to set up a winning drive.
Instead, Oklahoma defensive back Courtland Guillory intercepted Texas quarterback Arch Manning's final pass with 19 seconds left. The turnover gave the Sooners the ball at their own 39-yard line.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer completed passes of 13 and 20 yards to Isaiah Sategna, with both catches upheld after replay review. The Sooners then ran a play to position Sandell for the deciding kick.
Sandell, who earlier made a 53-yard field goal and missed another attempt from the same distance, converted from 47 yards as time expired.
Why It Matters
Oklahoma's win came despite an offense that generated only 238 total yards, below its 321-yard average entering the game. The Guardian reported that the Sooners' pregame average ranked last in the SEC.
Defense and special teams supplied two of Oklahoma's touchdowns. Dakoda Fields recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, and safety Peyton Bowen returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown with 10:07 remaining. Bowen's score gave Oklahoma a 24-17 lead.
Texas answered with a 75-yard drive, capped by Manning's 15-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr. with 6:32 left, tying the game at 24. But the Longhorns could not convert their final chances after Spetic's miss and Guillory's interception.
Background
The result followed a difficult previous outing for Oklahoma, which lost 41-13 at No. 2 Georgia two weeks earlier. Against Texas, the Sooners again struggled to sustain offense, but found decisive plays in all three phases.
Manning threw three touchdown passes for Texas while completing 19 of 31 passes for 260 yards. His two interceptions proved costly, including Bowen's touchdown return and the late interception that set up Oklahoma's winning possession.
Mateer completed 18 of 26 passes for 155 yards. His two late completions to Sategna helped Oklahoma move into field-goal range after the Sooners had struggled for much of the afternoon.
