Elon Musk gives at least $276 million to Republican midterm groups
The new donations bring Musk's known federal political giving for the 2025-26 cycle to roughly $366 million, making him the largest known donor of the 2026 midterms.
The Big Picture
Elon Musk has become the largest known donor of the 2026 midterm election cycle after giving at least $276 million to Republican political groups since July, according to figures reported by The New York Times and confirmed by a spokesperson for his America PAC.
The newly reported contributions bring Musk's known federal political giving for the 2025-26 cycle to roughly $366 million. That total is already greater than the approximately $290 million he spent during the 2024 presidential election, when he backed President Donald Trump's return to office.
The scale of the latest donations underscores the growing role of Musk's wealth in Republican campaign efforts as the party works to retain its congressional majorities ahead of the November 3 midterms.
What Happened
The largest portion of Musk's newly disclosed giving, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the principal super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates. The contribution is among the largest known individual political donations in U.S. history, according to CNBC and The Verge.
Musk also gave more than $76 million to America PAC, the super PAC he founded in 2024. The group has developed a voter-turnout operation focused on competitive Senate and House contests.
Other contributions included $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports House Republicans, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association, CNBC reported. Musk also gave $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, a group supporting Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton's Senate campaign.
The figures were disclosed shortly before a Thursday deadline for political committees to report third-quarter finances to the Federal Election Commission.
Why It Matters
The Senate Leadership Fund is spending heavily to protect the Republican Senate majority, including in Texas. Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico in a closely watched Senate contest. As of October 12, FiftyPlusOne's polling average showed Talarico leading Paxton 48.4% to 45.0%, according to CNBC.
America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo told The New York Times that the spending was designed to give Republicans "a fighting chance to defy history." Republicans currently hold majorities in both the House and Senate, while Democrats are seeking to regain control of Congress.
The influx of Musk's money gives Republican-aligned groups a substantial resource as campaign organizations increase advertising, voter-contact and turnout efforts in the final weeks before Election Day. The reported donations do not by themselves show how the groups will divide their spending among individual races.
Background
Musk's renewed political spending is notable because he said in May 2025 that he intended to reduce such activity. "In terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future," Musk said at the time.
His current giving instead exceeds his known spending in the prior presidential cycle. Musk's political profile also remains tied to Trump after the two repaired their relationship following a public falling-out, CNBC reported.
Musk's business presence in Texas has expanded in recent years. Tesla, X and The Boring Company are headquartered in the state, while SpaceX has growing manufacturing and launch operations there, according to CNBC.
What Happens Next
The expected Federal Election Commission filings could provide additional details about the finances of the political committees receiving Musk's contributions. Campaign spending is likely to intensify ahead of the November 3 election, which will determine congressional majorities as well as state and local offices.
