Three children and teacher killed in shooting at Bend elementary school
A 16-year-old former student shot six people at Silver Rail Elementary before a parent and a teacher intervened.
Becky Drury was shot at close range, fell to the floor and pretended to be dead because she hoped the gunman would not shoot her again.
The 54-year-old teacher was one of six people shot when 16-year-old Griffin J. John II entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, shortly before 1 p.m. on Oct. 15. Three boys, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed, along with Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher. The 5-year-old was identified as Rhoam Summer; the other two children have not been publicly named at their families' request.
A 7-year-old student remains in serious but stable condition. Drury suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries. In a statement released Oct. 21, she said she had run to see what was happening outside her classroom, saw the shooter and tried to close the door. He was already there. She said she could not get up, defend herself or protect anyone after being shot.
What happened: Police said John, a former Silver Rail student who was no longer enrolled in the Bend-La Pine district, crossed a fence, fired at a pickup truck and shot through the glass panes of locked school doors to get inside. He went directly to a special-needs classroom just left of the entrance, where all six victims were shot.
Police said he used a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun, fired as many as 15 rounds and still had 44 rounds of ammunition when he was stopped. Investigators have searched his home, electronic devices and social-media accounts. They have not announced a motive.
The people who intervened: Police said an unidentified teacher threw a cellphone at the shooter, tackled him and fought to take the shotgun away. That was not Drury, who said she was shot before she had a chance to act. The teacher who fought the gunman was not injured.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old Bend father with two daughters at Silver Rail, heard gunfire while driving by, entered the school and fatally shot John with a .40-caliber pistol, according to police and his family. Police credited both Giamanco and the teacher who struggled with the shooter with preventing more deaths.
What comes next: Most students in the Bend-La Pine district returned to class Oct. 21, but Silver Rail remained closed as the investigation and the community's grieving continue.
